SUMMARY:Texas Organizing Project 287(g) Teach In
DESCRIPTION:The Texas Organizing Project Criminal Justice Committee and United We Dream present a teach-in on the 287(g) immigration program that allows County Sheriffs to perform the functions of federal immigration agents (ICE) in the jails and out in the community. This program has allowed “287(g) Officers” to racially profile drivers and pedestrians\, illegally search and arrest people – violating their constitutional rights\, and conduct “sweeps” in Latino neighborhoods which has ruined the relationship between the law enforcement and Latino communities. \nThe Harris County Jail spent nearly $50 million in a two-year period to house undocumented immigrants being held at the request of federal authorities – more inmates than any other county jail in Texas. The Federal Government only\nreimburses the county about 8 percent of its annual reported costs. Only a few deportees are violent criminals and law enforcement resources are being diverted from protecting communities. \nTOP is committed\, with community and political entities\, to ending the 287(g) program. Please join us to learn more.

SUMMARY:Trump and the System that Spawned Him
DESCRIPTION:Donald Trump has been given more media attention than any other candidate this election cycle and at times seemed unstoppable. His hateful\, bigoted rhetoric and incitement of violence have targeted the rights of people of color\, immigrants\, women\, LGBTQ people\, and the working class as a whole. Nationally\, wealth inequality is growing; racist scapegoating of Muslims\, Latinxs and immigrants is still commonplace; #BlackLivesMatter has brought attention to police brutality and mass incarceration; and more people are losing hope in the political system and its establishment. \nJoin us for a discussion where we will ask: How do we make sense of Trump’s rise? What are our options? And\, are there alternatives to both Trump and politics as usual? \nSpeaker: Mario Ovalle\, UNT Alumn and Graduate Student in Anthropology at Hunter College. \nSponsored by: the International Socialist Organization and MUEVE

SUMMARY:Protest At The Dallas Zoo! (date is tentative)
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in another protest at the Dallas Zoo! This protest will be held on the first day that the 5 young elephants recently snatched up from Africa will be unveiled to the public. \nThese days\, zoos around the world are recognizing that they do not have the resources to properly care for a large animal that requires miles of space to roam. And we are learning more and more about the incredibly complex emotional lives of elephants and their tight family bonds. But the Dallas Zoo\, with profits in mind and a flagrant disregard for the lives of the animals\, made a quick move designed to thwart detractors and sidestep a scheduled court date. Now five more sad elephants will be relegated to spend their days in what is for them a small\, dreary enclosure\, away from their friends and family. \nIt is too late for these five – but we need to make sure they are the last elephants the Dallas Zoo steals. \nPlease come to the Zoo with your friends and family next Sunday (but don’t go in.) We will have some signs – but any you can bring would be welcome.

SUMMARY:Taking Sides: Revolutionary Solidarity and the Poverty of Liberalism
DESCRIPTION:Join Cindy Milstein for a discussion of the topics of the new anthology “Taking Sides: Revolutionary Solidarity and the Poverty of Liberalism!” \nAs the collection asserts — and this event will echo — the lines of oppression are already drawn. The only question is: which side are you on in the struggle against the violence that is white supremacy and policing? “Taking Sides” supplies an ethical compass and militant map of the terrain\, arguing not for reform of structurally brutal institutions but rather for their abolition. Its thirteen essays are sharp interventions that take particular aim at the role of nonprofits\, “ally” politics\, and “peace police” in demobilizing rebellions against hierarchical power. The book offers tools to hone strategies and tactics of resistance\, and holds out the promise of robust\, tangible solidarity across racial and other lines\, because in the battle for systemic transformation\, there are no outside agitators. \nSuch collective reflection is essential not only in helping to sustain the spirit of rebellion but also aiding it to claim some victories in the task of dismantling systemic violence\, such as states\, capitalism\, and settler colonialism\, or murderous policing\, white supremacy\, heteropatriarchy\, and so much more. This event will grapple with the conundrums and beauty of revolutionary solidarity. How might it (better) shape our aims\, strategies\, and tactics given the current grassroots resistance\, uprisings\, and solidarity projects on Turtle Island and globally? \n“Taking Sides is more than a book; it’s a politic aimed at the heart of every radical struggling against a racist state.”\n—Luis A. Fernandez\, author of Policing Dissent \n“Taking Sides compiles essential essays for street fighters\, land defenders\, and anticolonial accomplices. Its words challenge the current pacifist and NGO-led narratives that seek to manage and disarm people-powered rebellions on Turtle Island\, while inspiring readers to go out and fight side by side.”\n—Franklin López\, subMedia.tv \nFor more on the book\, including its contents\, see:\nhttps://www.akpress.org/takingsides.html

SUMMARY:Creeping Conservatism: Neo-liberalism at Home\, Militarism Abroad
DESCRIPTION:With the 2016 Election Cycle in full swing\, it has become apparent that the country has moved away from establishment politics towards the fringes of both parties; the phenomenon has caught most by surpise\, and has caused many to question the process and possible results of this poltical polarization. \nTo better understand the current poltical climate\, RISE has collaborrated with the Ahlul Bayt Student Organization at the University of Houston to host Professor Snehal SInghavi at the Univeristy of Houston to present his analysis on the subject. \nSnehal Shingavi is associate professor of English at the University of Texas\, Austin\, where he teaches South Asian literatures in English\, Hindi\, and Urdu\, as well as the literature of the South Asian diaspora. He received his PhD in English from the University of California\, Berkeley and has taught previously at Notre Dame de Namur University and the University of Mary Washington. He is a long time social justice activist\, having participated in a number of movements including the United Students Against Sweatshops\, Students for Justice in Palestine\, the Association of Graduate Student Employees/UAW local 2865\, the Campus Antiwar Network\, the Texas State Employees Union\, the People’s Task Force\, and Occupy Austin. \nHe is the author of The Mahatma Misunderstood: the politics and forms of literary nationalism in India (Anthem Books\, 2013). He has also translated Munshi Premchand’s Sevasadan (Oxford\, 2005) and the Urdu short-story collection\, Angaaray (Penguin\, 2014) and of Bhisham Sahni’s autobiography\, Today’s Pasts (Penguin\, 2015). He has a forthcoming translation of Agyeya’s Shekhar: A Life (Oxford\, 2015). SUMMARY:No More Politics as Usual: Socialism in the Air
DESCRIPTION:2015 ended with a disturbing cycle of public violence and racist fear-mongering. It has come in different forms: a regional civil war and massive refugee crisis in the Middle East; terror attacks by ISIS on the streets of Paris and by right-wingers against a Planned Parenthood clinic and a Black Lives Matter protest here in the U.S.; a mass shooting in San Bernardino; and the biggest wave of violence against Muslims since he days after the September 11 attacks. \nBut the horrors of the past months shouldn’t stop us from remembering 2015 was also a year of resistance to war\, poverty\, and oppression. There were numerous waves of mass demonstrations\, such as the uprising against police brutality in Baltimore-and even when there were not visible resistance there was a desire to understand the world and how to change it among a growing number of people. \nJoin the International Socialist Organization for a meeting to discuss what we can do to build an independent alternative from below to resist the politics of fear and scapegoating that are on offer from the two parties of the American political establishment that got us into this situation in the first place .

SUMMARY:Protest at the Dallas Zoo!
DESCRIPTION:Please join us to protest the part the Dallas Zoo played in ripping 17 elephants from their peaceful existence in the wilds of Africa\, sedating them\, crating them\, and shipping them off to be exhibited in three US zoos! \nIf you have questions\, call Susan at 214-577-6727.
