SUMMARY:TPI Healthcare Committee Interim Meeting - May 23\, 2016
DESCRIPTION:In considering options around the loss of services and subsequent cancelling of the Health Fair\, the Healthcare Committee decided that we would host a series of forums! \nThe first is expected to be July 21 around relationships and healthy dynamics in relating to your partners. \nThe plan is to follow this with sexual health for trans and gender diverse persons. \nTopics also under consideration include the other topics we would have considered for the health fair: binder safety\, packers\, and STPs; spiritual health; food security and nutrition; substance use safety; mental health; and reproductive health. All will depend on community resources and sources of expertise. \nCome get involved\, add your expertise\, request to do a presentation\, socialize with the committee participants\, and help plan forums that are meaningful to you and your friends! If you have a different topic you want to cover\, come discuss and let’s see how we can work it in! \nOpen to all. Committee meetings always include time for everyone to discuss issues and problems going on in their lives in a safe environment.

SUMMARY:Protest At The Dallas Zoo! (date is tentative)
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in another protest at the Dallas Zoo! This protest will be held on the first day that the 5 young elephants recently snatched up from Africa will be unveiled to the public. \nThese days\, zoos around the world are recognizing that they do not have the resources to properly care for a large animal that requires miles of space to roam. And we are learning more and more about the incredibly complex emotional lives of elephants and their tight family bonds. But the Dallas Zoo\, with profits in mind and a flagrant disregard for the lives of the animals\, made a quick move designed to thwart detractors and sidestep a scheduled court date. Now five more sad elephants will be relegated to spend their days in what is for them a small\, dreary enclosure\, away from their friends and family. \nIt is too late for these five – but we need to make sure they are the last elephants the Dallas Zoo steals. \nPlease come to the Zoo with your friends and family next Sunday (but don’t go in.) We will have some signs – but any you can bring would be welcome.

SUMMARY:TPI Prison Services Committee Meeting - May 18\, 2016
DESCRIPTION:Come and learn about our Prison Services Committee\, doing work to support and advocate for incarcerated trans persons across Texas. \nOne object of the committees is to grow participation and encourage leadership through support\, encouragement\, and community participation! We hope to rotate facilitators to give people experience planning and running meetings\, with help from committee leaders when needed. \nWe are currently writing letters and taking on other tasks to support incarcerated trans persons. We’ll be teaching you the basics\, and coming together to support each other with advice and debriefing (some of the letters and situations can be very heavy and emotionally challenging) so we all help each other do this better. \nPlease post questions or suggestions if you have any! \nGuests are welcome; come out and learn!

SUMMARY:PNM: You Can Run\, But You Can't Hide!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a rally and press conference in solidarity with New Mexicans organizing against toxic energy investments! \nThe Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) is proposing to raise its electricity rates by $123.5 million\, which would increase residential customer rates by 15.8%\, in order to fund expensive coal and nuclear power purchase agreements. \nIn an attempt to circumvent shareholder opposition to this dirty energy proposal\, this year PNM decided hold its annual shareholders meeting outside of New Mexico altogether\, hoping oppostion will not be able to follow… but thankfully some shareholders are able to make the trip and they need support from North Texans to help send a clear message that we will not accept dirty energy here\, there\, or anywhere! \nConsumer advocates and environmental organizers in NM and TX will join with sharholder activists to stage simultaneous actions at both the PNM headquaters in Albuquerque and shareholders meeting in Lewisville to challenge the proposed rate hikes and dirty investments in coal and nuclear resources.

SUMMARY:2016 Take Back the Night
DESCRIPTION:Take Back the Night is an event that was started in the 1970s due to sexual assault and gendered violence. Every year on the last Thursday of April\, Sexual Assault Awareness Month\, the national Shine Your Light Foundation\, formerly known as Take Back the Night (TBTN) holds a nation-wide event called 10 Points of Light to Take Back the Night. Each year they designate ten locations circling the United States to simultaneously hold a march and a vigil to show support for survivors\, and for unity in our commitment to ending sexual violence in all forms. \nThis year\, the University of North Texas has been selected by the national TBTN organization to hold our very own 10 Points of Light! UNT’s Take Back the Night will take place during sexual assault awareness month on April 28th from 5:00-8:30pm at the Library Mall. The event will consist of a tabling fair with resources and activities\, a march around campus\, guest speakers\, giveaways\, and the overall empowerment of survivors of sexual assault. There is no cost to attend. Please participate in this event to bring awareness and education to this serious issue. To learn more about Take Back the Night\, please visit the national Take Back the Night website at takebackthenight.org \nWHAT TO BRING:\nPlease bring signs and posters with messages advocating against sexual assault. Feel free to incorporate the name of your organization into the message to express solidarity.\n—————————————-\nIf you have any questions about this event\, please email peer.advocate@unt.edu

SUMMARY:Texas Senate Hearing on Property Tax Reform and Relief
DESCRIPTION:Join TOP as we raise public awareness of and support for drawing down federal Medicaid dollars at the next Texas Senate Property Tax Reform and Relief hearing. \nTexas has both the highest number of people as well as the highest rate of uninsured in the country. \nThe burden of that falls onto local taxpayers who end up paying for healthcare THREE TIMES OVER: 1) We pay through our insurance premiums (if we have insurance) 2) We pay through rising healthcare costs from our providers and 3) We pay through our local property taxes that go to support safety net hospitals and healthcare systems that care for the uninsured and don’t get paid otherwise. \nWe need accept federal healthcare dollars\, Medicaid Expansion dollars to relieve the increasing need and pressure to raise local taxes to meet the increasing demand on our local healthcare providers. \nFor more information\, contact Brianna Brown\, (214) 729-1119\, bbrown@organizetexas.org.
