SUMMARY:Film Screening\, 'Don't Frack With Denton' and Community Story Sharing
DESCRIPTION:The documentary\, ‘Don’t Frack with Denton’ tells the story of our community fighting to defend our neighborhoods from fracking. Following the film there will be a short Q&A with the film makers. \nThis film screening is part of a larger story-sharing collaboration and education effort with ‘Conversations from the Open Road’\, a citizen journalism group from Virginia. Their group has reached out to Frack Free Denton and other frontline communities facing environmental and social injustices. They are here to hear our stories of what it’s like to live with fracking in our backyards. For all who are willing\, there will be time set aside after the Q&A for story-sharing with their group. \nWe invite you to come listen and share your stories of how fracking has affected your life and the ways in which you have resisted and organized for change in your community. To be clear\, this is neither a strategy meeting\, a debate\, or a technical explanation of the process of fracking. This is a time set aside to foster sharing and listening to one another’s experiences and to add to the understanding of the humanity within these struggles. Our community here has brought great tenacity\, creativity and perserverance to this issue. We hope you will come and share how you have been a part of this journey! \nFor a better understanding of the vibe of the night\, here is more about the group from Virginia’s philosophy in their words: \n* We believe that learning from and listening to people is the cornerstone of a compassionate understanding of our world.\n* Learning through Experience endures.\n * Social and digital media is the most engaging\, accessible\, and democratic medium to share knowledge – and we love it!\n * Traveling is Transformative\n* There is no single story\, to any person and place. We are not shaping a documentary\, but a collection of mixed-media shorts that reflect our experience of the complexity of a place and issue\n* We are NOT looking for answers\, but rather the humanity within every struggle and inspiration.\n* Being a Citizen requires empathy\, gained in knowledge and experience of the issues effecting our community.\n* Genuine Knowledge comes from probing the complexity within every issue.\n* Traveling\, creating and learning collaboratively is an electric experience\, and worth more than an individual pursuit.\n* It is time to be Content-Creators\, not just passive recipients of knowledge. \nYou can check out their website at: http://www.conversationsfromtheopenroad.com/ \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Trans Survivors Meeting

If you would be interested in helping start this group\, and especially if you are both a survivor and have experience working with peer survivors\, please feel free to drop by between 6pm and closing to help develop this effort. \nIF YOU HAVEN’T BEEN TO OUR LOCATION: we are located on the second floor of a building with offices\, and the most prominent sign on the outside of the building is “Mercy Family Clinic\,” near the intersection of Illinois and Nicholson\, next to El Rancho supermarket. SUMMARY:Everyone Has a Right2Justice - 55 Cross Vigil
DESCRIPTION:Harris County’s jail system is the largest in the state and the third largest in the country. 77% of those in the Harris County jail are there because they can’t afford bail of $5\,000 or less. \nBetween 2009 and 2015 55 people died in the Harris County jail while awaiting pretrial\, unable to afford bail. As of May 25\, there have been five reported deaths of inmates in the Harris County jail under Sheriff Hickman’s tenure \nThat means if a person is poor\, there’s almost no chance of being released prior to trial\, even if charged with a low level\, nonviolent offense. But a rich person can walk the streets free before trial no matter what kind of danger they pose. That is NOT right. That is NOT just. \nSo\, Please Join the “55” Cross Vigil to pay respect to the families and the 55 victims who died in Harris County Jail while waiting trial. \nCommunity Partners:\nTexas Organizing Project (TOP)\nNo More Blood Shed Movement\nOperation Outreach (OG1)\nPowerHouse Ministries\nGreater Houston Coalition for Justice (GHCFJ)\nHouston Peace and Justice Center (HPJC)

SUMMARY:Denton City Council Votes on Gas Plants
DESCRIPTION:This Tuesday Denton City Council will be voting on a new long-term energy plan that includes spending $265 million to build gas-fired power plants in Denton. If our elected council approves this dangerous plan\, residents will be forced to breathe poisoned air for decades. \nThe rate of childhood asthma in the DFW area is 20-25%\, compared to the national average of 10% and the Texas statewide average of 9%. According to the American Lung Association Denton has F rated air quality. Our most vulnerable members of society simply can not afford new sources of toxic emissions. \nEVERYONE: show up\, sign up\, speak out! Voices from our community are our last defense against this plan! Hope to see you and all your friends at City Hall on Tuesday.

SUMMARY:Prison Letter Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Interested in writing letters to incarcerated trans or gender nonconforming persons\, but need some guidance and encouragement? Want to write but not sure what to say? Or afraid that you might not know how to help someone advocate for their safety or healthcare needs? Or maybe you would rather write while in a social setting\, sharing space with friends and community? Then join us for the Prison Letter Writers Workshop! \nTPI’s Prison Services Committee writes letters to incarcerated trans persons\, but we wanted to provide additional opportunity to support our siblings behind the walls. If you want to learn and try writing someone\, maybe just a one-off letter of support and encouragement without committing to write more\, or see what it is like before committing\, this is a time to do that! \nWe’ll talk a little about our work overall with incarcerated persons and some of the individuals we are connected with. SUMMARY:TPI Prison Services Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Come and learn about our Prison Services Committee\, doing work to support and advocate for incarcerated trans persons across Texas. \nOne object of all our committees is to grow participation and encourage leadership through support\, encouragement\, and community participation! We hope to rotate facilitators to give people experience planning and running meetings\, with help from committee leaders when needed. \nIn Prison Services\, we are currently writing letters and taking on other tasks to support incarcerated trans persons. One task is design an publication of two texts written by incarcerated members on surviving prison in general\, and surviving solitary confinement. \nWe’ll be teaching the basics about letter writing and coming together to support each other with advice and debriefing (some of the letters and situations can be very heavy and emotionally challenging) so we all help each other do this better. \nPlease post questions or suggestions if you have any! \nGuests are welcome; come out and learn! We really need help with writing letters\, so if you can come help\, please do!

SUMMARY:Debtors’ Prison Teach-in with Sen. Rodney Ellis
DESCRIPTION:The Texas Organizing Project and state Sen. Rodney Ellis present a teach-in on debtors’ prison\, bail reform\, and the public defenders’ office. \nAccording to the Houston Chronicle\, more than 6\,600 people\, or about three-quarters of the inmates at the jail complex on the north side of downtown Houston are waiting to go to trial. Each one costs taxpayers about $45 a day. \nIt is common for the court system to use fines\, many that come with penalties for tardiness attached and easily add up as punishments for minor offenses. Under these practices\, people are jailed unconstitutionally for failure to pay. Those jailed then face the increased risk of losing their jobs and their homes. \nCome learn about what can be done to fix this broken system.

SUMMARY:Trans Survivors Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We have had this idea for quite some time\, and think a group supporting survivors could be a great benefit to the community. We are opening our space to this at this time without too much preconcieved notion of where it will go. We would like to identify at least one and possibly two or three trans persons with experience moderating discussions around sensitive topics like this. This is NOT meant to be counseling sessions as there are professional services who can provide much better care in such settings — this is meant to be peer-to-peer discussion and healing and empowerment. \nViolence can be defined in many ways\, from physical attacks to the general and pervasive social violence that permeates our lives on a daily basis. We won’t define limits to violence at this time\, but instead will open the space to anyone who feels they have experienced violence in any way and needs to talk about that experience and oppression. \nPlease stop by our community space if you would like to be involved in this program. Alternately\, contact Nell at nell@tpride.org or 214-394-9835 to discuss involvement in the group. This link should take you directly to our building: https://goo.gl/maps/743SKeioaK12 \nIf you can’t find us\, PLEASE CALL 214-449-1439!

SUMMARY:TPI Fundraising Team Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We are having our first meeting of the Fundraising Team this Tuesday. We will be joined by April Mitchell\, Executive Director of Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center\, and Nan Little Kirkpatrick\, Executive Director of the Texas Equal Access Fund\, both with some great experience in fundraising. \nI’ve gone through our volunteer forms and invited everyone who said they had an interest in gaining experience in fundraising. This meeting isn’t specifically closed\, but we want to focus on persons with an interest in being actively involved in this team. \nIf you haven’t received an email invitation but would like to join us\, please call Nell at 214-394-9835 to let her know you would like to attend. \nThe hope is that we use this meeting to look at some general ideas around approaches to fundraising\, determining need\, determining the value of our work (April has a good understanding of that)\, and considerations for fundraising for grassroots empowerment organizations—that is\, how does fundraising further community empowerment. \nThe email included links to some helpful resources for those specifically invited\, and we include them here if you are interested as well. \n— An article about Incite!’s The Revolution Will Not Be Funded conference and its impact on non-profit funding (http://www.incite-national.org/sites/default/files/incite_files/resource_docs/6634_lip-npic.pdf).\n— Building a Grassroots Fundraising Program\, by Dean Spade (http://srlp.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/GettingItRightFromStart.pdf). This article has some good ideas\, not all of which have worked out as well as originally hoped.\n— Fundraising Bright Spots (http://www.haasjr.org/resources/fundraising-bright-spots). This is a recent report looking at some success stories in fundraising using creative and non-traditional approaches. It includes information about some orgs doing successful trans justice work.
