Dallas\nhas a 43-year history of unaccountable\npolice use of deadly force. Every instance\nof death by police gunfire in Dallas over\nthe past 43 years – and there have been\nhundreds – has been found to be justified\nby police internal affairs\, the district\nattorney\, and the Dallas County grand\njury. DESCRIPTION:What is Saturday? BreakICE Day! \nOn Saturday\, September 10\, TPI will start hosting weekly meetings to get ready for information dissemination and actions related to ICE opening a new detention center in Alvarado\, Texas. This will be the second location in the nation with a dedicated pod to detain trans persons. \nThere is NO reason to deny persons seeking asylum community based detention EXCEPT that congress has set a 34\,000 bed quota at the behest of private prison operators who make money by putting people in cages! \nThere is NO reason to take trans persons seeking asylum half-way across the country — away from family\, community support\, and legal representation — to bring them to a state that is unfriendly to asylum seekers and that is bent on violence against trans persons\, as seen by the suits and other actions being pressed by our state government representatives! \nThe schedule is subject to change\, but here is what we currently have planned: \n~ September 3\, any time 12 – 9pm — anyone interested in helping organize\, please stop by and contribute your ideas\, how you would like to be involved\, and learn about plans under consideration \n~ September 10\, 3 – 6pm — discuss detention system in general\, trans demographics\, ideas for community outreach\, ideas for direct action\, create banners and signs \n~ September 17\, 3 – 6pm — recap from September 10\, select prior ideas for further development\, set up system for tracking people and keeping people safe\, create banners and signs \n~ September 24\, 3 – 6pm — recap from September 17 meeting\, develop community outreach and direct action plans\, work on banners and signs \n~ October – December — begin implementing community outreach and information dissemination first\, then other actions as we move into December \nWe will need people involved at a variety of levels\, from those who wish to keep track of people and keep people engaged and make sure they are safe\, to those who wish to take on support roles\, to those willing to take part in direct actions at various locations. \nIf you would like to contact someone for more information\, please email TPI at info@tpride.org or call us at 214-449-1439.

SUMMARY:TPI Trans Survivors Meeting
DESCRIPTION:This is a peer support group that we would like to start\, and right now we are looking for persons who could guide a group discussion such as this. Until we find a facilitator\, TPI holds space during this time specifically to allow persons who have experienced violence to open up about their survival experience with supportive community. \nViolence is defined broadly. It includes not just physical and sexual assaults\, but also verbal abuse\, discrimination\, and harassment. One topic of discussion we will open the floor to this week is the violence of the Texas government in filing anti-trans suits\, and how that affects our daily lives. \nThe purpose is to provide a safe space for trans and gender diverse survivors of violence to talk about their experiences\, how they are coping\, and learn about other resources that may be available to help them cope. \nIf you would be interested in helping start this group\, and especially if you are both a survivor and have experience working with peer survivors\, please feel free to drop by between 6pm and closing to help develop this effort.

DESCRIPTION:CHOICE + Champs begins to redefine Reproductive Choice and  brings awareness to the Reproductive Justice Movement in Texas. It is also a call to action for like-minded professionals within the DFW Metroplex area looking to get involved and change the status quo within communities they are connected to. \nThis event is a fundraiser for the 1st Ever Texas Black Women Reproductive Justice Policy Summit and the launch our campaign: #TXBlackWomenRiseUp.  \nTHE SUMMIT is a convening of leading women’s rights and reproductive justice advocates who will shed light on reproductive oppression’s harmful effects on women. \nTHE CAMPAIGN is a movement produced by and for black women in direct response to the lack of press coverage\, effective policy strategies\, and advocacy initiatives designed for Black women’s reproductive health in the state of Texas.  Through this campaign\, The Afiya Center will challenge the history of shame attached to black women’s choices in birthing using the reproductive justice framework. \nJoin us as we celebrate coming together to form a united front and be a part of building a powerful framework for ACTION!

We would like to start a Housing Services Committee that would improve access to existing shelter facilities and further develop the Dallas Trans Shared Housing Project\, as well as take on other issues addressing discrimination in housing. \nWe are inviting anyone who is interested in this work to come talk with others about where you would like to see the work go\, and how you could contribute. DESCRIPTION:The Healthcare Committee is working on the first of a series of forums around trans healthcare\, healthy relationships\, and healthy living! If we can get more people involved\, we will also start planning another health fair! \nFor the forums\, the first is expected to be on the topic of relationships and healthy dynamics relating to your partners. \nThe plan is to follow this with sexual health for trans and gender diverse persons. \nForums also under consideration include the other topics we consider for our health fairs: binder safety\, packers\, and STPs; spiritual health; food security and nutrition; substance use safety; mental health; and reproductive health. All will depend on community resources and sources of expertise. \nCome get involved\, add your expertise\, request to do a presentation\, socialize with the committee participants\, and help plan forums that are meaningful to you and your friends! If you have a different topic you want to cover\, come discuss and let’s see how we can work it in! \nOpen to all. Committee meetings always include time for everyone to discuss issues and problems going on in their lives in a safe environment.

DESCRIPTION:The Texas Organizing Project Criminal Justice Committee presents a teach-in on grand juries. \nA grand jury is a group of citizens that reviews criminal complaints and decides if there is enough evidence to issue an indictment (take the case to trial). \nLast month\, a grand jury in McKinney\, TX decided to not indict police officer Eric Casebolt on criminal charges after he was recorded on video body slamming a teenage girl in a bikini and pulling his gun on other teens at a pool party.  \nHarris County grand juries have cleared all officers of criminal wrongdoing between 2008-2012\, and more than a quarter of the 121 civilians shot by law enforcement were unarmed. \nCome and learn the facts about the selection process for grand juries and why it’s important for members of our communities to serve on them. \nAttorney Daryl Jordan Jr. will provide a presentation and answer questions.
