SUMMARY:TPI Fundraising Team Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The TPI Fundraising Team is charged with helping us raise money so we can do even more social justice work and eventually hire YOU as paid staff! \nTPI has prepared a strategic plan (http://tpride.org/_doc/adaptivePlanningStrategy(2016-2020).pdf) and a funding development plan (http://tpride.org/_doc/fundingDevelopmentPlan(2016-2020).pdf) to take us through 2020. We would love community input on these and of course involvement of as many as possible in helping us take our next steps forward. \nThese documents are essential elements that help us work toward our vision: “A world where all identities related to gender are free from stigma\, where relationships are subject to no administrative regulation beyond that of individual agency and desire\, and where all individuals may freely express themselves in terms of gender and relationships without fear of violence.” \nThe “strategic plan” is more accurately named an “adaptive planning strategy” to better convey TPI’s approach to grassroots planning as keeping broad goals in sight\, but being flexible about how we achieve those goals\, allowing us to be responsive to opportunities as they arise. \nThe funding development plan has projections for our needs through 2020. As with many projections\, these will change\, but this provides a starting point and goals to work toward. \nThis meeting\, we will continue to move forward with developing work around our three goals of a) funding our advocacy and accountability work\, b) funding to hire a social worker or case manager\, and c) funding to hire an organizer for project development. \nFor announcements of this and other TPI events\, please consider subscribing to our email list: http://tpride.org/subscribe/

SUMMARY:Break ICE meeting
DESCRIPTION:What is Saturday? BreakICE Day! \nTPI is hosting weekly meetings to get ready for information dissemination and actions related to ICE opening a new detention center in Alvarado\, Texas. This will be the second location in the nation with a dedicated pod to detain trans persons. \nThere is NO reason to deny persons seeking asylum community based detention EXCEPT that congress has set a 34\,000 bed quota at the behest of private prison operators who make money by putting people in cages! \nThere is NO reason to take trans persons seeking asylum half-way across the country — away from family\, community support\, and legal representation — to bring them to a state that is unfriendly to asylum seekers and that is bent on violence against trans persons\, as seen by the suits and other actions being pressed by our state government representatives! \nThe schedule is subject to change\, but here is what we currently have planned: \n~ September 24\, 3 – 6pm — recap from September 17 meeting\, develop community outreach and direct action plans\, work on banners and signs \n~ October – December — begin implementing community outreach and information dissemination first\, then other actions as we move into December \nWe will need people involved at a variety of levels\, from those who wish to keep track of people and keep people engaged and make sure they are safe\, to those who wish to take on support roles\, to those willing to take part in direct actions at various locations. \nIf you would like to contact someone for more information\, please email TPI at info@tpride.org or call us at 214-449-1439.

SUMMARY:TPI Trans Survivors Meeting
DESCRIPTION:This is a peer support group that we would like to start\, and right now we are looking for persons who could guide a group discussion such as this. Until we find a facilitator\, TPI holds space during this time specifically to allow persons who have experienced violence to open up about their survival experience with supportive community. \nViolence is defined broadly. It includes not just physical and sexual assaults\, but also verbal abuse\, discrimination\, and harassment. One topic of discussion we will open the floor to this week is the violence of the Texas government in filing anti-trans suits\, and how that affects our daily lives. \nThe purpose is to provide a safe space for trans and gender diverse survivors of violence to talk about their experiences\, how they are coping\, and learn about other resources that may be available to help them cope. \nIf you would be interested in helping start this group\, and especially if you are both a survivor and have experience working with peer survivors\, please feel free to drop by between 6pm and closing to help develop this effort.

SUMMARY:TPI Prison Services Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Come and learn about our Prison Services Committee\, doing work to support and advocate for incarcerated trans persons across Texas. \nOne object of all our committees is to grow participation and encourage leadership through support\, encouragement\, and community participation! We hope to rotate facilitators to give people experience planning and running meetings\, with help from committee leaders when needed. \nIn Prison Services\, we are currently writing letters and taking on other tasks to support incarcerated trans persons. One task is design an publication of two texts written by incarcerated members on surviving prison in general\, and surviving solitary confinement. \nWe’ll be teaching the basics about letter writing and coming together to support each other with advice and debriefing (some of the letters and situations can be very heavy and emotionally challenging) so we all help each other do this better. \nPlease post questions or suggestions if you have any! \nGuests are welcome; come out and learn! We really need help with writing letters\, so if you can come help\, please do!

SUMMARY:Prison Letter Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: If you are coming\, you must let Nell know as if no one is coming she has another conflicting event to attend: nell@tpride.org or 214-394-9835\, text or call. \nInterested in writing letters to incarcerated trans or gender nonconforming persons\, but need some guidance and encouragement? Want to write but not sure what to say? Or afraid that you might not know how to help someone advocate for their safety or healthcare needs? Or maybe you would rather write while in a social setting\, sharing space with friends and community? Then join us for the Prison Letter Writers Workshop! \nTPI’s Prison Services Committee writes letters to incarcerated trans persons\, but we wanted to provide additional opportunity to support our siblings behind the walls. If you want to learn and try writing someone\, maybe just a one-off letter of support and encouragement without committing to write more\, or see what it is like before committing\, this is a time to do that! \nWe’ll talk a little about our work overall with incarcerated persons and some of the individuals we are connected with. And we’ll do our best to answer any questions you may have. \nIf you are interested in writing a letter or just learning about this work\, stop by around 6pm or later (we close about 9pm) and chat with others and consider writing a letter! \nAlso\, we are considering moving this to Saturday. If you would like to participate and a Saturday meeting would be better or worse for you\, let us know whether or not to move the time: nell@tpride.org.

SUMMARY:Fall Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next four Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:30pm to learn the history of police brutality in Dallas and ways to protect yourself and get involved. Detailed descriptions below. \nSeptember 13:\nDallas is America’s Greatest\nUntold Story of Police Brutality.\nInequality pervades every aspect of life in\nDallas – in the high and growing rates of\nchild poverty and homelessness; in\nsubstandard and unaffordable housing; in\nthe underfunded\, de facto segregated\nschools – but nowhere is this inequality\nmore pronounced than in policing. Dallas\nhas a 43-year history of unaccountable\npolice use of deadly force. Every instance\nof death by police gunfire in Dallas over\nthe past 43 years – and there have been\nhundreds – has been found to be justified\nby police internal affairs\, the district\nattorney\, and the Dallas County grand\njury. The last time a Dallas cop was\nindicted in a deadly shooting\, Richard\nNixon was President. \nSeptember 20:\nKnow Your Rights\nWhen the Police Stop You.\nFind out your rights when you are\nconfronted with local police\, ICE\, FBI\, or\nyou name it. Do you know your rights if\nyou are stopped by the police? If a police\nofficer threatens or intimidates you? If\nthere is a raid in your community? Learn\nwhat your rights are in relation to ICE and\nlaw enforcement and what you can do to\nprotect you and your family. Learn how to\nbe proactive and empower yourself and\nothers without losing sight of the dangers\nassociated with exercising one’s power\nduring encounters with the police. \nSeptember 27:\nGrand Jury & Trial Jury:\nHow You Can Help Deliver Justice.\nJury Service is a critical aspect in\nachieving justice. Learn how the Dallas\nCounty Jury process works and why it is\nimportant to not only attend jury duty\,\nbut to also make an effort to become\njurors. You will learn all about both the\nGrand Jury process as well as Jury Trials\nfrom local veteran attorneys\, Anthony\nEiland and Nigel Redmond of Redmond\,\nEiland\, and Guidry\, PLLC. They will\npresent literature explaining the process\nand answer questions from the audience. \nOctober 4:\nStride Toward Justice • 9 Steps to\nChange Policing in America.\nThere is a way forward. Come hear\nMAPB’s proposals for fair and just\npolicing locally\, statewide\, and\nthroughout the country: Independent\nprosecutors\, drug testing of officers\,\ncompensation for victims of police\,\nnational standards for use of deadly\nforce\, and more. Let’s work together for\nreal change.\nBring your ideas

DESCRIPTION:TPI has seen a big increase in requests for help in housing over the last few months. We would like to start a Housing Services Committee that would improve access to existing shelter facilities and further develop the Dallas Trans Shared Housing Project\, as well as take on other issues addressing discrimination in housing. \nWe are inviting anyone who is interested in this work to come talk with others about where you would like to see the work go\, and how you could contribute. This is preliminary work to form a committee to continue the important efforts to improve access to adequate shelter and housing for trans persons in the Dallas area.

SUMMARY:Healthcare Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Healthcare Committee is working on the first of a series of forums around trans healthcare\, healthy relationships\, and healthy living! If we can get more people involved\, we will also start planning another health fair! \nFor the forums\, the first is expected to be on the topic of relationships and healthy dynamics relating to your partners. \nThe plan is to follow this with sexual health for trans and gender diverse persons. \nForums also under consideration include the other topics we consider for our health fairs: binder safety\, packers\, and STPs; spiritual health; food security and nutrition; substance use safety; mental health; and reproductive health. All will depend on community resources and sources of expertise. \nCome get involved\, add your expertise\, request to do a presentation\, socialize with the committee participants\, and help plan forums that are meaningful to you and your friends! If you have a different topic you want to cover\, come discuss and let’s see how we can work it in! \nOpen to all. Committee meetings always include time for everyone to discuss issues and problems going on in their lives in a safe environment.
