SUMMARY:First Ever Texas Black Women's Reproductive Justice Policy Summit
DESCRIPTION:Texas Black women have grown tired of being left out of the conversations being had about their bodies and for that reason The Afiya Center has taken the charge to amplify their voices and spearhead the First Ever Texas Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Policy Summit. The purpose of the summit is to create a convening of Black women in Texas who can lead the conversation and on the critical issues surrounding Black women\, reproductive rights\, and the abortion movement. The big vision is to bring in new allies and resources for Black women living in Texas and provide a framework to implement in their respective districts\, communities\, and organizations. \nOn October 9 – 11th in Dallas\, Texas\, The Afiya Center will bring together leading women’s rights and reproductive justice advocates and community members to shed light on reproductive oppression’s harmful effects on women\, and to collaborate on an intersectional policy agenda focused on groundbreaking solutions. SUMMARY:TPI Healthcare Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Healthcare Committee is open to your suggestions of what you would like to see happening to advance trans healthcare in the Dallas area. One project we would like to work on is compiling provider info for the RAD Remedy directory of trans affirming care. We’ve discussed the direction and ambition of this tool with the wonderful folks who are directing the project\, and we think it will be a great asset to the trans community! If you would like to be involved\, please let us know! \nWe would also like to work on a series of forums around trans healthcare\, healthy relationships\, and healthy living! If we can get more people involved\, we will also start planning another health fair! \nForums also under consideration include the other topics we consider for our health fairs: binder safety\, packers\, and STPs; spiritual health; food security and nutrition; substance use safety; mental health; and reproductive health. All will depend on community resources and sources of expertise. \nCome get involved\, add your expertise\, request to do a presentation\, socialize with the committee participants\, and help plan forums that are meaningful to you and your friends! If you have a different topic you want to cover\, come discuss and let’s see how we can work it in! \nOpen to all. Committee meetings always include time for everyone to discuss issues and problems going on in their lives in a safe environment.

SUMMARY:Break ICE meeting
DESCRIPTION:What is Saturday? BreakICE Day! \nTPI is hosting weekly meetings to get ready for information dissemination and actions related to ICE opening a new detention center in Alvarado\, Texas. This will be the second location in the nation with a dedicated pod to detain trans persons. \nPlease note that this is part of a coordinated national effort that includes Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement\, Transgender Law Center\, Organizacion Latina de Trans en Texas\, RAICES\, Grassroots Leadership\, LULAC 4871 – The Dallas Rainbow Council\, United We Dream\, Aquí Estamos RGV\, Dallas Coalition Against Bigotry\, Trans Pride Initiative\, and others. \nThere is NO reason to deny persons seeking asylum community based detention EXCEPT that congress has set a 34\,000 bed quota at the behest of private prison operators who make money by putting people in cages! \nThere is NO reason to take trans persons seeking asylum half-way across the country — away from family\, community support\, and legal representation — to bring them to a state that is unfriendly to asylum seekers and that is bent on violence against trans persons\, as seen by the suits and other actions being pressed by our state government representatives! \nThe schedule is subject to change\, but here is what we currently have planned: \n~ October – December — begin implementing community outreach and information dissemination first\, then other actions as we move into December \nWe will need people involved at a variety of levels\, from those who wish to keep track of people and keep people engaged and make sure they are safe\, to those who wish to take on support roles\, to those willing to take part in direct actions at various locations. \nIf you would like to contact someone for more information\, please email TPI at info@tpride.org or call us at 214-449-1439.

We would love community input on these and of course involvement of as many as possible in helping us take our next steps forward. \nThese documents are essential elements that help us work toward our vision: “A world where all identities related to gender are free from stigma\, where relationships are subject to no administrative regulation beyond that of individual agency and desire\, and where all individuals may freely express themselves in terms of gender and relationships without fear of violence.” \nThe “strategic plan” is more accurately named an “adaptive planning strategy” to better convey TPI’s approach to grassroots planning as keeping broad goals in sight\, but being flexible about how we achieve those goals\, allowing us to be responsive to opportunities as they arise. \nThe funding development plan has projections for our needs through 2020. As with many projections\, these will change\, but this provides a starting point and goals to work toward. \nThis meeting\, we will continue to move forward with developing work around our three goals of a) funding our advocacy and accountability work\, b) funding to hire a social worker or case manager\, and c) funding to hire an organizer for project development. \nFor announcements of this and other TPI events\, please consider subscribing to our email list: http://tpride.org/subscribe/

SUMMARY:TPI Trans Survivors Meeting
DESCRIPTION:This is a peer support group that we would like to start\, and right now we are looking for persons who could guide a group discussion such as this. Until we find a facilitator\, TPI holds space during this time specifically to allow persons who have experienced violence to open up about their survival experience with supportive community. \nViolence is defined broadly. It includes not just physical and sexual assaults\, but also verbal abuse\, discrimination\, and harassment. One topic of discussion we will open the floor to this week is the violence of the Texas government in filing anti-trans suits\, and how that affects our daily lives. \nThe purpose is to provide a safe space for trans and gender diverse survivors of violence to talk about their experiences\, how they are coping\, and learn about other resources that may be available to help them cope. \nIf you would be interested in helping start this group\, and especially if you are both a survivor and have experience working with peer survivors\, please feel free to drop by between 6pm and closing to help develop this effort.

SUMMARY:TPI Prison Services Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Come and learn about our Prison Services Committee\, doing work to support and advocate for incarcerated trans persons across Texas. \nOne object of all our committees is to grow participation and encourage leadership through support\, encouragement\, and community participation! We hope to rotate facilitators to give people experience planning and running meetings\, with help from committee leaders when needed. \nIn Prison Services\, we are currently writing letters and taking on other tasks to support incarcerated trans persons. One task is design an publication of two texts written by incarcerated members on surviving prison in general\, and surviving solitary confinement. \nWe’ll be teaching the basics about letter writing and coming together to support each other with advice and debriefing (some of the letters and situations can be very heavy and emotionally challenging) so we all help each other do this better. \nPlease post questions or suggestions if you have any! \nGuests are welcome; come out and learn! We really need help with writing letters\, so if you can come help\, please do!

SUMMARY:Prison Letter Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: If you are coming\, you must let Nell know as if no one is coming she has another conflicting event to attend: nell@tpride.org or 214-394-9835\, text or call. \nInterested in writing letters to incarcerated trans or gender nonconforming persons\, but need some guidance and encouragement? Want to write but not sure what to say? Or afraid that you might not know how to help someone advocate for their safety or healthcare needs? Or maybe you would rather write while in a social setting\, sharing space with friends and community? Then join us for the Prison Letter Writers Workshop! \nTPI’s Prison Services Committee writes letters to incarcerated trans persons\, but we wanted to provide additional opportunity to support our siblings behind the walls. If you want to learn and try writing someone\, maybe just a one-off letter of support and encouragement without committing to write more\, or see what it is like before committing\, this is a time to do that! \nWe’ll talk a little about our work overall with incarcerated persons and some of the individuals we are connected with. And we’ll do our best to answer any questions you may have. \nIf you are interested in writing a letter or just learning about this work\, stop by around 6pm or later (we close about 9pm) and chat with others and consider writing a letter! \nAlso\, we are considering moving this to Saturday. If you would like to participate and a Saturday meeting would be better or worse for you\, let us know whether or not to move the time: nell@tpride.org.
