SUMMARY:TPI Prison Services Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Come and learn about our Prison Services Committee\, doing work to support and advocate for incarcerated trans persons across Texas. \nOne object of all our committees is to grow participation and encourage leadership through support\, encouragement\, and community participation! We hope to rotate facilitators to give people experience planning and running meetings\, with help from committee leaders when needed. \nIn Prison Services\, we are currently writing letters and taking on other tasks to support incarcerated trans persons. One task is design an publication of two texts written by incarcerated members on surviving prison in general\, and surviving solitary confinement. \nWe’ll be teaching the basics about letter writing and coming together to support each other with advice and debriefing (some of the letters and situations can be very heavy and emotionally challenging) so we all help each other do this better. \nPlease post questions or suggestions if you have any! \nGuests are welcome; come out and learn! We really need help with writing letters\, so if you can come help\, please do!

SUMMARY:Prison Letter Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Interested in writing letters to incarcerated trans or gender nonconforming persons\, but need some guidance and encouragement? Want to write but not sure what to say? Or afraid that you might not know how to help someone advocate for their safety or healthcare needs? Or maybe you would rather write while in a social setting\, sharing space with friends and community? Then join us for the Prison Letter Writers Workshop! \nTPI’s Prison Services Committee writes letters to incarcerated trans persons\, but we wanted to provide additional opportunity to support our siblings behind the walls. If you want to learn and try writing someone\, maybe just a one-off letter of support and encouragement without committing to write more\, or see what it is like before committing\, this is a time to do that! \nWe’ll talk a little about our work overall with incarcerated persons and some of the individuals we are connected with. And we’ll do our best to answer any questions you may have. \nIf you are interested in writing a letter or just learning about this work\, stop by around 6pm or later (we close about 9pm) and chat with others and consider writing a letter! \nAlso\, we are considering moving this to Saturday. If you would like to participate and a Saturday meeting would be better or worse for you\, let us know whether or not to move the time: nell@tpride.org.

SUMMARY:Socialists In Movements
DESCRIPTION:We will be meeting in UNT\, Language building room 316 \nWith only 25% of the vote\, Trump’s presidency doesn’t represent a mandate by the people for his agenda. But rather than fight back against Trump’s plans\, the Democratic Party leadership is asking the public to give Trump a chance. This normalization of Trump’s rhetoric and agenda will make it easier for him to deliver on the racist and bigoted promises he made during his campaign. \nLuckily millions around the country are looking for ways to actively fight Trump’s agenda\, from mass deportations and a Muslim registry to climate destruction and the gutting of working class living standards. Many of those people voted for Clinton. Others\, frustrated with the Democratic Party and the political system\, either didn’t vote or voted for a 3rd Party. The question is: how do we unite all those opposed to Trump into a movement that can stop him in his tracks? \nWe can’t give bigots like Trump and his administration any chances. But what do we do next? How do socialists help build broad movements that bring together masses of people\, who aren’t socialists\, to fight against Trump’s agenda? \nSocialists have developed a method—the United Front—as part of a strategy for bringing together various organizations into large coalitions around defensive fights while\, at the same time\, arguing the need for an explicitly socialist alternative to the status quo and\, in the process\, winning others to join the fight for a socialist society. \nThis week\, we will be discussing the article “Socialists and Movements” by Joel Geier (below) on the central role played by socialists in the campus revolts of the 1960s and the lessons that movement offers for activists today. Joel Geier is a longtime member of the ISO and was a central participant in the Free Speech Movement that rocked UC Berkeley and spread to campuses across the country. \nWe will also be discussing local organizing against Trump’s agenda. Students from UNT and TWU are organizing together to demand that our universities become sanctuary schools for undocumented students\, faculty\, and staff. A petition and more information can be found here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScCp2nVMCdGMfcdsEsY29zWOx8X6Tr2AYI34pgnMhzLfhzGsg/viewform?c=0&w=1 \nJoin us for this discussion!\n________________________________________\nReading for this meeting: “Socialists and Movements” by Joel Geier\, International Socialist Review (ISR)\nhttp://www.isreview.org/issues/47/socmove.shtml \nFurther Reading: “Understanding the United Front” by Paul D’Amato\, Socialist Worker https://socialistworker.org/2013/08/13/understanding-the-united-front

SUMMARY:Where We Stand discussion
DESCRIPTION:With the recent election of Donald Trump as president of the United States\, and an emboldened right wing\, it is important that we continue to build and organize a left-wing in this country and internationally that can challenge the agenda of the right. Just as importantly\, it is vital that we build movements and socialist organizations that oppose the whole of the capitalist system and puts forward an alternative to the politics of profit. The alternative to capitalism is socialism\, a system based on workers’ control of the means of production and a system based on meeting human need. \nInternational Socialist Organization (ISO) members will be meeting with people who are interested in learning more about the politics of the International Socialist Organization this Saturday\, December 3\, at 4 pm. We will be sending out the location once we have secured one. \nWe will be discussing an ISO pamphlet called Where We Stand to help center and introduce a discussion of our basic principles and politics (http://www.internationalsocialist.org/pdfs/WhereWeStandPamphlet.pdf) \nPeople who are attending are encouraged to read as much as possible\, and come prepared with questions and comments. If you are unable to read all of it\, we still encourage you to attend. The pamphlet is about 30 pages long. \nThe purpose of this meeting is to meet with people who are interested in learning more about our politics with the purpose of joining if they are in agreement with the politics of the ISO. However\, if you are unsure where you stand\, or are just wanting to learn more\, without necessarily joining\, we still encourage you to attend. \nIf you are unable to attend this meeting\, but would like to discuss the Where We Stand with someone\, please message the ISO Facebook page.
