SUMMARY:Tump's War on the Environment: the Case for Ecosocialism
DESCRIPTION:This meeting will take place at UNT’s Chemistry Building\, room 253. \nIn the short time that Donald Trump has been in office\, his administration has deepened the war on our environment. From giving the green light to the Dakota Access Pipeline to appointing Pruitt as head of the EPA to deepening imperialist wars\, Trump has shown that\, if unchallenged\, he will wreak havoc on an environment which is already facing global climate change.  \nThe Trump administration’s attacks on the environment uncover a deeper drive of capitalism to make profit\, at whatever the cost. Capitalism’s constant drive for expansion inevitably undermines environmental sustainability. \nAfter only being in office for a few months\, we see what the new president has to offer: environmental racism\, war\, mass murder\, and environmental destruction. \nIn order to challenge this\, we must build mass movements which are able to connect on an international scale\, uniting social movements with environmental movements and labor movements. In the US\, our movements must be independent of both the Republicans and the Democrats. In the process of fighting for reforms and building broad movements\, we also need a longer-term vision of a different world: a world based on cooperation\, equality\, democracy\, ecological sustainability\, and workers’ power — a socialist world. \nWe invite you to join this conversation with us. We will have 4 presenters speaking on these topics and time for discussion.

DESCRIPTION:Come and learn about our Prison Services Committee\, doing work to support and advocate for incarcerated trans persons across Texas.  \nOne object of all our committees is to grow participation and encourage leadership through support\, encouragement\, and community participation! We hope to rotate facilitators to give people experience planning and running meetings\, with help from committee leaders when needed. \nIn Prison Services\, we are currently writing letters and taking on other tasks to support incarcerated trans persons. One task is design an publication of two texts written by incarcerated members on surviving prison in general\, and surviving solitary confinement.  \nWe’ll be teaching the basics about letter writing and coming together to support each other with advice and debriefing (some of the letters and situations can be very heavy and emotionally challenging) so we all help each other do this better. \nPlease post questions or suggestions if you have any! \nGuests are welcome; come out and learn! DESCRIPTION:The U.S. already spends more on the military than any country in the world.  Trump wants to INCREASE the already-bloated military budget while cutting funding for human needs!  ENOUGH is ENOUGH!!  \nAs part of the 2017 GLOBAL DAY OF ACTION ON MILITARY SPENDING\, North Texas Veterans For Peace and CodePINK Greater Dallas will hold a tax-day demonstration\, beginning at 8:00pm at the Dallas Main Post Office\, to advocate for better budget priorities.    \nAccording to the National Priorities Project\, over half of U.S. discretionary spending goes towards the military. Participants will share pie charts and “cost of war” trade-offs (what could have been financed in Dallas County with the money we spent on war) with tax-day passersby about how their federal tax dollars are being spent and encourage them to express their opinions about where their money should go. \nThey will also join the North Texas Light Brigade at the Main Post Office 8:30pm to convey their messages in lights. \nWHEN:  Tuesday\, April 18\, 2017\n8:00pm – demonstration\, flyering\, & greeting taxpayers\n8:30pm – tax day light display at P.O. with North Texas Light Brigade \nWHERE:  Dallas Main Post Office\n401 Dallas-Ft. Or afraid that you might not know how to help someone advocate for their safety or healthcare needs? Or maybe you would rather write while in a social setting\, sharing space with friends and community? Then join us for the Prison Letter Writers Workshop! \nTPI’s Prison Services Committee writes letters to incarcerated trans persons\, but we wanted to provide additional opportunity to support our siblings behind the walls. If you want to learn and try writing someone\, maybe just a one-off letter of support and encouragement without committing to write more\, or see what it is like before committing\, this is a time to do that! \nWe’ll talk a little about our work overall with incarcerated persons and some of the individuals we are connected with. And we’ll do our best to answer any questions you may have. \nIf you are interested in writing a letter or just learning about this work\, stop by around 6pm or later (we close about 9pm) and chat with others and consider writing a letter! \nAlso\, we are considering moving this to Saturday. We want to tailor this program to the women involved and we will be doing brief survey.  \n“Afiya Talks” are bi-weekly\, casual\, salon style gatherings where an intergenerational group of Black and other women of color can come together to discuss shared interests\, situations\, and backgrounds. The goals of the Afiya Talks are to create a culturally affirming space for Black women and other women of color to share their stories\, receive advocacy trainings\, and transform pain to power.

DESCRIPTION:blkART214 is an annual juried exhibition designed to showcase the recent work of professional and emerging artists of African descent who reside and are active in the artistic environment of the Dallas area. I honor of the 30th Anniversary of the South Dallas Cultural Center\, this year’s theme is Memory\, Movements and the Present Moment.  blkART214 is a component of ART 214\, a collaboration between the City of Dallas’ Office of Cultural Affairs cultural centers and facilities in celebration of Dallas Arts Month 2017.  \nArtists include:\nSanah Brown\,\nSpencer Evans\nRocynda Kedley\nFela Raymond\nJamal Dubose\nJazzmine Bustamonte\nJohnathan Victor\nKimbra Young\nRoneka Patterson\nTiffany Anderson\nJas Mardis \nJuror:\nAnnette Lawrence\nAnnette Lawrence is a Professor of Studio Art at the University of North Texas\, College of Visual Arts and Design. She received a MFA from The Maryland Institute College of Art\, Hoffberger School of Painting\, and a BFA in Sculpture from The Hartford Art School\, University of Hartford. \nLawrence’s art is widely exhibited and held in museums\, and private collections including The Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston\, The Dallas Museum of Art\, The Rachofsky Collection\, ArtPace Center for Contemporary Art\, The Blanton Museum\, American Airlines\, and the Dallas Cowboys. Lawrence has participated in artist in residence programs in Houston\, Texas\, Skowhegan\, Maine\, Johannesburg\, South Africa\, Tanera Mor\, Scotland\, and Melbourne\, Australia.
