DESCRIPTION:School’s out! Working parents\, take a break! Everyone deserves a summer vacation\, but not everyone who works to sustain their family can afford it. \nThis Saturday\, we are hosting an arts and writing workshop for children of all ages to make drawings and write letters to the Mayor of Houston\, Sylvester Turner\, for family sustaining wages\, benefits\, Second Chance jobs and affordable housing.  \nYou are welcome to drop off your kids with us on Saturday for a fun and interactive workshop. (We are looking for adult volunteers to help supervise the kids as well.) Art supplies\, pizza and refreshments provided. SUMMARY:I Am Jazz Book Reading & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Youth First\, a program of Resource Center\, and Dallas City Council Member Adam Medrano are partnering to host an I Am Jazz book reading and panel discussion on Thursday\, May 18\, at 4 p.m. in the lobby at Dallas City Hall\, located at 1500 Marilla St\, Dallas\, TX 75201. This event is in conjunction with HRC (Human Rights Campaign) and NEA (National Education Association) second annual National I Am Jazz School and Community Readings\, in support of transgender youth. Council Member Medrano will read the book\, followed by a panel discussion with representatives of the transgender community and youth service providers.  \nI Am Jazz is a children’s book written by transgender teen\, Jazz Jennings. She is one of the first transgender children to talk publicly about her identity. At the age of 7\, Jennings spoke with Barbara Walters on “20/20.” Following a year of unprecedented attacks on the rights and dignity of transgender young people – both at the state and federal levels – the day of readings are intended to foster safe and welcoming schools and communities for young people.

DESCRIPTION:Interested in writing letters to incarcerated trans or gender nonconforming persons\, but need some guidance and encouragement? Want to write but not sure what to say? Or afraid that you might not know how to help someone advocate for their safety or healthcare needs? Or maybe you would rather write while in a social setting\, sharing space with friends and community? Then join us for the Prison Letter Writers Workshop! \nTPI’s Prison Services Committee writes letters to incarcerated trans persons\, but we wanted to provide additional opportunity to support our siblings behind the walls. If you want to learn and try writing someone\, maybe just a one-off letter of support and encouragement without committing to write more\, or see what it is like before committing\, this is a time to do that! \nWe’ll talk a little about our work overall with incarcerated persons and some of the individuals we are connected with. And we’ll do our best to answer any questions you may have. \nIf you are interested in writing a letter or just learning about this work\, stop by around 6pm or later (we close about 9pm) and chat with others and consider writing a letter! \nAlso\, we are considering moving this to Saturday. DESCRIPTION:Texas currently ranks 38th among the 50 states in average per-student spending. \nOn top of that\, our state legislature is providing fewer dollars to school districts\, shifting more of the burden for school funding to the local level. \nDallas ISD has been making important progress\, despite facing recent budget cuts that will likely become even more severe. And because of the general under-funding of public education\, especially from Austin\, we must take action locally. As a community\, we need to step up to ensure ALL our students\, particularly students of color and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds\, receive an excellent education. \nThat’s why a diverse group of more than 16 local community organizations\, including TOP\, NAACP Dallas\, Alliance AFT\, North Texas LULAC\, Leadership ISD\, Stand for Children – Texas\, Faith in Texas\, For Oak Cliff\, West Dallas 1\, Our Communities\, Our Schools\, and others\, announced the launch of the new Strong Schools Strong Dallas coalition on April 20\, 2017. SUMMARY:Remember His Name: Vigil for Jordan Edwards
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, April 29th\, 2017\, fifteen year old High School freshman Jordan Edwards was fatally shot and killed by a police officer as he and a group of friends were driving away from a party. Police officers initially stated that upon arriving to the scene of the party\, gunshots were heard and the car that Jordan was in was backing towards them “aggressively\,” prompting the officer to fire into the vehicle\, striking and killing Jordan.  Monday\, after body camera footage was reviewed\, this was found to not be true\,  and the police chief of Balch Springs\, Jonathan Haber\, even stated that the shooting “did not meet the core values” of their department. In other words\, it should not have happened\, and Jordan Edwards should still be alive today. \nUnfortunately\, it did\, and another family is now grieving a life taken far too soon. Edwards was a straight A student and athlete who was loved by both his family and his peers\, and on Thursday\, May 4th\, 2017\, we will come together as a community to honor him and his memory with a candlelight vigil at Virgil T. Irwin Park in Balch Springs\, just a few blocks away from where this tragedy took place. Faith leaders Pastor Michael Waters\, Iman Omar Suleiman\, Rabbi Elana Zelony\, Pastor Michael Bowie\, Dr. Irie Lyn Session\, and Pastor William Carlsie will be in attendance to speak and offer words of prayer. Mother’s Against Police Brutality are an odficial sponsor of this event. \nIt is heartrending that yet again\, we must come together as a community to mourn the taking of a life so young by people who are supposed to protect and to serve. But we will come together in a show of solidarity with the family and community mourning the loss of this bright young light.
