SUMMARY:The International Day of Al-Quds
DESCRIPTION:Confirmed Speakers: \n1. Abbas Hamideh – Co Founder of Al Awda\n___________________________________________________ \nA Call for Solidarity with Palestine and the World’s Oppressed \nThe International Day of Solidarity with Palestine comes at a time of intensified aggression by occupation forces and violence in the region. As conditions on the ground continue to deteriorate globally\, the situation is amongst the worst facing Palestinians since 1948. \nAs a principle\, solidarity with the world’s oppressed provides a guiding light of how to navigate in an increasingly hostile\, complex and violent world. Every day in the corporate media – from Palestine to Iraq\, Syria\, Yemen\, Burma\, Ferguson and beyond\, we are bombarded with images of mass violence and those spewing hate against poor people and people of color. \nLet us create an alternative\, inclusive vision that is in solidarity with indigenous peoples and sovereignty rights globally\, that challenges settler colonial practices\, and violations of civil rights and military occupation and militarization\, including the criminalization\, mass incarceration and all forms of oppression and terrorism. \nTo remain silent in the face of injustice and violence that any and all people are subjected to\, is to side with the oppressor. \nCome join us and stand against injustice\, oppression\, terrorism\, Islamophobia\, rascism and hate.

We need Good Jobs instead!

SUMMARY:Prison Letter Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Interested in writing letters to incarcerated trans or gender nonconforming persons\, but need some guidance and encouragement? Want to write but not sure what to say? Or afraid that you might not know how to help someone advocate for their safety or healthcare needs? Or maybe you would rather write while in a social setting\, sharing space with friends and community? Then join us for the Prison Letter Writers Workshop! \nTPI’s Prison Services Committee writes letters to incarcerated trans persons\, but we wanted to provide additional opportunity to support our siblings behind the walls. If you want to learn and try writing someone\, maybe just a one-off letter of support and encouragement without committing to write more\, or see what it is like before committing\, this is a time to do that! \nWe’ll talk a little about our work overall with incarcerated persons and some of the individuals we are connected with. And we’ll do our best to answer any questions you may have. \nIf you are interested in writing a letter or just learning about this work\, stop by around 6pm or later (we close about 9pm) and chat with others and consider writing a letter! \nAlso\, we are considering moving this to Saturday. If you would like to participate and a Saturday meeting would be better or worse for you\, let us know whether or not to move the time: nell@tpride.org.

SUMMARY:DSP Presents Juneteenth Weekend 2017
DESCRIPTION:Although similar to Black Pride Weekend\, Juneteenth Weekend is a staple in Dallas\, Texas celebrating the life\, love and culture of the Black LGBT community. This weekend of events is Dallas’ only LGBT celebration during National Pride Month\, the month of June as designated by President Barack Obama. SUMMARY:I Am Jazz Book Reading & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Youth First\, a program of Resource Center\, and Dallas City Council Member Adam Medrano are partnering to host an I Am Jazz book reading and panel discussion on Thursday\, May 18\, at 4 p.m. in the lobby at Dallas City Hall\, located at 1500 Marilla St\, Dallas\, TX 75201. This event is in conjunction with HRC (Human Rights Campaign) and NEA (National Education Association) second annual National I Am Jazz School and Community Readings\, in support of transgender youth. Council Member Medrano will read the book\, followed by a panel discussion with representatives of the transgender community and youth service providers. \nI Am Jazz is a children’s book written by transgender teen\, Jazz Jennings. She is one of the first transgender children to talk publicly about her identity. At the age of 7\, Jennings spoke with Barbara Walters on “20/20.” Following a year of unprecedented attacks on the rights and dignity of transgender young people – both at the state and federal levels – the day of readings are intended to foster safe and welcoming schools and communities for young people.

SUMMARY:TOP Community Conversation: Improving Dallas ISD through a TRE
DESCRIPTION:Texas currently ranks 38th among the 50 states in average per-student spending. \nOn top of that\, our state legislature is providing fewer dollars to school districts\, shifting more of the burden for school funding to the local level. \nDallas ISD has been making important progress\, despite facing recent budget cuts that will likely become even more severe. And because of the general under-funding of public education\, especially from Austin\, we must take action locally. As a community\, we need to step up to ensure ALL our students\, particularly students of color and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds\, receive an excellent education. \nThat’s why a diverse group of more than 16 local community organizations\, including TOP\, NAACP Dallas\, Alliance AFT\, North Texas LULAC\, Leadership ISD\, Stand for Children – Texas\, Faith in Texas\, For Oak Cliff\, West Dallas 1\, Our Communities\, Our Schools\, and others\, announced the launch of the new Strong Schools Strong Dallas coalition on April 20\, 2017. (Learn more at http://strongschoolsstrongdallas.org/) \nThis coalition was formed to advocate for equitable access to a quality education for ALL Dallas kids. Currently\, the coalition is engaging with community members to support a Tax Ratification Election (TRE)\, which if approved could generate more than $100 million in additional funding annually to advance educational outcomes for Dallas ISD students. To make sure this effort is successful\, we need to hear from you! \nTake this quick\, simple online survey to share your thoughts on Dallas ISD schools: http://bit.ly/2oFZatg \nFor more information\, contact Empress Lindsey\, (469) 203-0496\, mlindsey@organizetexas.org.
