SUMMARY:Prison Letter Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Interested in writing letters to incarcerated trans or gender nonconforming persons\, but need some guidance and encouragement? Want to write but not sure what to say? Or afraid that you might not know how to help someone advocate for their safety or healthcare needs? Or maybe you would rather write while in a social setting\, sharing space with friends and community? Then join us for the Prison Letter Writers Workshop! \nTPI’s Prison Services Committee writes letters to incarcerated trans persons\, but we wanted to provide additional opportunity to support our siblings behind the walls. If you want to learn and try writing someone\, maybe just a one-off letter of support and encouragement without committing to write more\, or see what it is like before committing\, this is a time to do that! \nWe’ll talk a little about our work overall with incarcerated persons and some of the individuals we are connected with. And we’ll do our best to answer any questions you may have. \nIf you are interested in writing a letter or just learning about this work\, stop by around 6pm or later (we close about 9pm) and chat with others and consider writing a letter! \nAlso\, we are considering moving this to Saturday. If you would like to participate and a Saturday meeting would be better or worse for you\, let us know whether or not to move the time: nell@tpride.org.

SUMMARY:Stop Santiago's Deportation! Paramos la deportación de Santiago!
DESCRIPTION:(sigue en español abajo) \nSantiago is a friend\, father\, neighbor\, construction worker\, musician\, community activist\, and the guy you want at your party to start the dancing! He is originally from Veracruz\, Mexico and has called Houston home for about 20 years where he lives with his two daughters\, who are both citizens. \nSantiago has been an active member of local community organizations dedicated to fighting for immigrant families for more than 5 years. He is currently a leader of Texas Organizing Project with the Good Jobs Campaign fighting for a living wage\, better protections\, respect and dignity for workers. \nHe got involved after working for over 10 years in the construction industry\, frustrated with the rampant discrimination and wage theft and having suffered an injury on the job requiring multiple surgeries.\nOn Thursday\, he was picked up by ICE in his apartment. Santiago believes he was targeted by ICE because he has a past criminal offense. He completed his jail sentence and probation\, and paid all fees for that charge 10 years ago. He paid his dues to society and shouldn’t be punished again for that one mistake. \nJoin us to fight back against his deportation!

SUMMARY:Phone Banking for the TRE
DESCRIPTION:While the board vote for a 13¢ or or 6¢ TRE didn’t happen this past weekend\, as previously hoped\, the added time does provide us a new opportunity to apply even more pressure towards the Trustees to allow families in Dallas ISD to make the decision on whether or not to invest in our students. Some Trustees has said that they do not believe their constituents are in favor of a property tax increase\, despite evidence from the community and data from parent surveys saying the exact opposite. \nOn Thursday from 5PM – 8PM\, TOP (Texas Organization Project\, New Address: 400 S Zang Blvd Suite 1025\, Dallas TX 75208) will be organizing a phone bank to call constituents\, inform them of the issue\, and ask them to make their voices heard to their Trustees before the vote. There will be pizza and some great company\, as well as $70m – $100m annually on the line for our students! \nTOP and the SSSD coalition would love to have you! If you have quesitons\, please message Strong Schools\, Strong Dallas. If you are lost\, please call TOP at 214-586-0867.

SUMMARY:The Texas Moms Matter Act- HB 11
DESCRIPTION:The Texas Moms Matter Act (HB 11) will be heard before the Public Health Committee of the Texas Legislature this Wednesday beginning at 8:30 a.m. in committee room E2.012 (map linked below). State Representative Shawn Thierry and The Afiya Center will be hosting a press conference e addressing the maternal mortality crisis in Texas\, specifically its impact on African American mothers. \nWe are asking that Texans take a stand and do something to protect the lives of our mothers! Stand with us with the following actions:\n1) Come by the Capitol Wednesday to vote in support of HB 11 (instructions here: https://www.mytxlegis.legis.state.tx.us/hwrspublic/Video/HouseWitnessReg.mp4 ). \n2) Stand with us at the press conference at 11 a.m. in support of legislatures taking the issue of maternal mortality\, particularly the devastating disparities impacting Black mothers\, seriously! \n3) If you can’t make it\, call your State Representative and Senator demanding that they support HB 11 and get it voted out of committee! Find the contact information for your elected official here: http://www.fyi.legis.state.tx.us/Home.aspx \nTexas Moms Matter Act:\nThe Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Task Force is a multi-disciplinary task force created within the Department of State Health Services to review cases of pregnancy-related deaths and trends in severe maternal morbidity. In 2016\, they shared their findings with the Legislature and revealed that African American women are disproportionally at risk of maternal death.\nAdditionally\, African American women accounted for just 11.4% of all births in 2011-2012\, but accounted for 28.8% of all maternal deaths. HB 11 is a comprehensive piece of legislation authored to tackle many aspects of our current maternal mortality crisis in Texas. \nTexas Capitol Map: http://www.bcm.edu/pathimmuno/index.cfm?PMID=14240
