DESCRIPTION:** LOCATION: UNT Curry Hall\, room #204 ** \nThe Trump administration’s war on working people has emboldened the far right\, leading to a ride in violent attacks by extremists and open rallies by the alt-right and the KKK in Berkley\, Portland\, and Charlottesville. Democratic politicians have failed to pose a real alternative to Trump and the right\, instead saying we need to hold back on demands that would alleviate the immiseration facing working people\, like taxing the rich\, single payer healthcare\, and a living wage. \nAt the same time\, the opportunities to build the left and socialist organizations are the best they’ve been in decades. We need to mobilize a mass movement to defeat the far right on the streets. And we must construct a left political alternative that raises people’s hopes and builds solidarity against the right’s attempts to scapegoat the poor\, minorities\, women\, immigrants\, and people of color for rising inequality and social despair.  \nSocialism – the politics of a democratic working class movement from below – is the revolutionary answer to right wing populism and neoliberal centrism. Socialist organization must be a central component of this new left if we are to effectively challenge Trump the far right and fight for a better future.

SUMMARY:Walkout Against Racism and SB4
DESCRIPTION:Trump and the Republican party have normalized and encouraged racist thought and action\, especially against immigrants. In Texas the Governor has signed SB4 into law. SB4\, known as Texas’ “show me your papers” law allows police to stop suspected undocumented immigrants and empowers local police officers to act as ICE officers\, thereby legalizing racial discrimination and cultivating fear and anxiety among immigrants.  \nThe attack on immigrants has been accelerated since Trump has been elected\, and the sentiment against them has been fueled by xenophobic and nationalistic rhetoric\, the kind that excites white supremacists and Nazis to hit the streets and violently harass people of color\, immigrants\, and left-wing protestors. Fascists have been given fertile ground to grow their forces. We must confront them when they become emboldened enough to show their faces\, wherever they may be. \nWe must also fight against the institutional racism that SB4 is the most recent attempt to double down on. The fight against white supremacy and fascism must also be the fight for immigrant rights. We support the call for a Walk-Out September 1st. Together we can show Abbott that those who reject racism and will stand with immigrants are in the majority. And the bigots and racists are in the minority. \nStudents at UNT and TWU have called for their campus to become Sanctuaries\, but with SB4 this is would be outlawed.\nThrough walkout we are showing our University that we will not be divided and we will show up for our immigrant neighbors. Laws have been on the wrong side of history and our government has been on the wrong side of history. Our tax dollars need to be going to better things than walls\, and training and paying local police to racially profile. Walk out with to show your solidarity with immigrants.

SUMMARY:SB4 Court Injunction Rally
DESCRIPTION:Chief U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia issued a temporary injunction on SB 4 confirming the obvious: SB4 is anti-immigrant and anti-democracy. This injunction blocks the worst parts of the law – forced collusion with Immigration and Customs Enforcement\, the ability of local law enforcement to inquire about immigration status\, and the power of democratically elected officials to choose how they want to engage with federal immigration officials. \nRAICES\,  Texas Organizing Project\, Unite Here\, Move SA\, SA Pro Immigrant Coalition\, SA Free Speech Coalition\, and Mi Familia Vota will be hosting a rally and press conference tomorrow morning in front of the federal courthouse to talk about the recent court ruling against SB4! \nAll of the cities and counties who joined the lawsuit\, all the law enforcement officers who spoke out against SB 4 must take this as a sign that their action was worth it. We now call upon them to adopt local policies to stop the collusion between police and ICE.

DESCRIPTION:Interested in writing letters to incarcerated trans or gender nonconforming persons\, but need some guidance and encouragement? Want to write but not sure what to say? Or afraid that you might not know how to help someone advocate for their safety or healthcare needs? Or maybe you would rather write while in a social setting\, sharing space with friends and community? Then join us for the Prison Letter Writers Workshop! \nTPI’s Prison Services Committee writes letters to incarcerated trans persons\, but we wanted to provide additional opportunity to support our siblings behind the walls. If you want to learn and try writing someone\, maybe just a one-off letter of support and encouragement without committing to write more\, or see what it is like before committing\, this is a time to do that! \nWe’ll talk a little about our work overall with incarcerated persons and some of the individuals we are connected with. And we’ll do our best to answer any questions you may have. \nIf you are interested in writing a letter or just learning about this work\, stop by around 6pm or later (we close about 9pm) and chat with others and consider writing a letter! \nAlso\, we are considering moving this to Saturday. He is originally from Veracruz\, Mexico and has called Houston home for about 20 years where he lives with his two daughters\, who are both citizens. \nSantiago has been an active member of local community organizations dedicated to fighting for immigrant families for more than 5 years. He is currently a leader of Texas Organizing Project with the Good Jobs Campaign fighting for a living wage\, better protections\, respect and dignity for workers. \nHe got involved after working for over 10 years in the construction industry\, frustrated with the rampant discrimination and wage theft and having suffered an injury on the job requiring multiple surgeries.\nOn Thursday\, he was picked up by ICE in his apartment. Santiago believes he was targeted by ICE because he has a past criminal offense. He completed his jail sentence and probation\, and paid all fees for that charge 10 years ago. DESCRIPTION:While the board vote for a 13¢ or or 6¢ TRE didn’t happen this past weekend\, as previously hoped\, the added time does provide us a new opportunity to apply even more pressure towards the Trustees to allow families in Dallas ISD to make the decision on whether or not to invest in our students. Some Trustees has said that they do not believe their constituents are in favor of a property tax increase\, despite evidence from the community and data from parent surveys saying the exact opposite. \nOn Thursday from 5PM – 8PM\, TOP (Texas Organization Project\, New Address: 400 S Zang Blvd Suite 1025\, Dallas TX 75208) will be organizing a phone bank to call constituents\, inform them of the issue\, and ask them to make their voices heard to their Trustees before the vote. There will be pizza and some great company\, as well as $70m – $100m annually on the line for our students! \nTOP and the SSSD coalition would love to have you!
