SUMMARY:America Ferrera's Out of Reach at Santikos Bijou
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free screening of America Ferrera’s Out of Reach along with a Q&A and discussion with local leaders to learn all the ways we can fight back against policies like SB4. \nEven before the Trump Administration took office\, some 11 million undocumented immigrants were already subject to a brutal detention and deportation machine. A drastic shift in rhetoric around immigrants\, a sharp rise in raids\, the travel ban\, and the rescinding of DACA are all indicative of an antagonistic Administration whose hardened stance on immigrants and refugees is intended to push some of the country’s most vulnerable into the shadows. \nNowhere is this more so than in Texas\, a state that remains the epicenter of immigration activism. Undocumented Texans are fighting not only an increasingly anti-immigrant federal government\, but also an emboldened state government. Activists are currently mobilizing against Senate Bill 4\, a controversial measure designed to crack down on “sanctuary cities.” If implemented\, the bill\, commonly referred to as the “show me your papers” law\, would give local law enforcement the authority to ask about a person’s immigration status during routine interactions such as traffic stops and force local law enforcement to comply with federal immigration officials. Although a federal court issued an order temporarily blocking the majority of SB4 from going into effect on September 1st\, a federal appeals court recently limited the federal court’s decision. The next court hearing on SB4 will be scheduled in early November. \nA new film called Out of Reach follows actress America Ferrera as she travels to Texas in the final months of the Obama Administration to find out how these immigration policies are affecting the 1.65 million undocumented people currently living in the state. \nA ticket does not guarantee a seat\, but seating will be given on a first come first serve basis with priority to those who RSVP here: https://outofreachdallas.eventbrite.com \nThis showing is presented by by San Antonio organizations and individuals who make up the Pro-Immigrant Coalition/Coalicion Pro-Inmigrante and Working Films. The Pro-Immigrant Coalition is composed of CCVI\, MCDP\, Club Coahuilense\, UNITE HERE\, Southwest Workers Union\, Esperanza Peace and Justice Center\, PEACE Initiative\, San Antonio\, Progressive Alliance\, Fuerza Unida\, San Antonio Alliance\, Texas Organizing Project\, Domesticas Unidas\, Southwest Voter Reg & Education Project\, Indivisible SATX\, Academia America\, National Organization for Women San Antonio\, RAICES\, and Maryknoll-San Antonio.

SUMMARY:Denton's Noche Pa Nosotros - Mixer and Dance Party
DESCRIPTION:A night for me\, a night for you\, a night for us.\nNoche pa mi\, noche pa ti\, noche pa nosotros. \nCome bless us with your presense\, reclaim space with us. \nMUEVE and Denton’s International Socialist Organization are hosting a Mixer for organizations and collectives that are involved in organizing and activist work\, including artivism\, immigrant’s rights\, and freeing Palestine\, and for folx who have been interested in getting involved in struggles but want to see which organizations or group of folx works best for them. MUEVE and ISO will be hosting a family style potluck\, please feel free to bring your secret recipe of mac n cheese or your mom’s recipe of enchiladas. \nThe second portion of the event will be a dance party\, get ready for some reggaeton. Our djs for the night:\n_pichi\nNancy \nThis event is towards building a community of resistance\, against the grip of capitalism\, against just surviving\, but of fighting to thrive. A part of that entails we celebrate our queer/trans kin\, our immigrant siblings\, and reminding people of color that they not only matter\, but also that they deserve to live happy and healthy lives. This event will be *safer* through the efforts of everyone present. \nWe will be asking for $5 donations at the door\, we encourage everyone to donate since our organizations are grassroots and we don’t money from big corporations\, but of course we will not turn anyone away due to lack of funds. \nIf you are interested in tabling PLEASE message MUEVE or ISO\, we would love to have you with us! We are prioritizing groups of people who are doing work in the community. \n——————————– \nThe ground rules were taken from PARADISE ISLAND’s Cool Schmool’s Feminist Art show:\n• Bring cash + credit for vendors\n• Open mic is for music\, poems\, performance\, and to act as a soap box to say what’s on your mind as an act of catharsis in these trying times. Women/poc/queer people are encouraged to go up\, as we are all artists here! Please give CW/TWs when needed.\n• This is a safer space: that means absolutely NO racism\, sexism\, homophobia\, transphobia\, ableism\, rapists\, abusers\, or other forms of oppression allowed! Do NOT bring guns or drugs to the event!\n• Do NOT touch people without their consent.\n• This is an ALL AGES event and we want to keep it that way. There is a lack of venues already that allow 21 and under peeps\, and so this keeps in with the DIY punk ethos of allowing those who are already turned away from society due to age.\n• This is BYOB but NO UNDERAGE DRINKING! We’ve put in a lot of time and effort to create this\, please be mindful so this event won’t get shut down or the organizer in trouble! We wanna keep doing events like these. ❤\n• Don’t get super wasted and be responsible.\n• Respect the house! You are in someone’s home\, treat it like you would if you were at a loved one’s place. Throw trash away\, don’t leave cigarette butts on the ground\, etc. use common sense. \nIf folx are seen breaking these rules\, you will risk being kicked out. We’re gonna have a good time y’all.

SUMMARY:March To End Animal Exploitation
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we take to the streets for animals! \nTogether let’s make this the biggest event for animals Dallas has EVER seen! Our message is simple: Their lives and their bodies are their own\, not ours to use or for corporations to profit from! \nVeganism as an ethical standpoint is great\, but the animals need more from us. Violence and exploitation happens outside of our personal lives\, so our fight against it can’t end there either. We want to help in creating a more active vegan community focused on animals (people and the environment too!)\, to challenge their objectification in society\, but point the finger at the greedy speciesist industries directly responsible for their ruthless exploitation and commodification. \nSure\, one march won’t accomplish these things overnight\, but its a start\, and our hope is that it will change minds\, bring us together\, and create a community with purpose. Help us take a step towards a world that no longer accepts any form of dominance over one another. Let’s make some noise for animal liberation! \nMore info to come.

SUMMARY:Action to Extend D-SNAP Application Process
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we demand that Harris County Judge Ed Emmett work with our congressional delegation to extend the D-SNAP application period and make it available at more locations. \nPeople who need D-SNAP extend well beyond those who had their homes destroyed. In his faulty calculations\, Emmett seems to have forgotten that people were unable to work for days or weeks either because their homes\, job sites or cars flooded. Missing days of work can have a lasting impact on people who were already barely making it paycheck to paycheck. D-SNAP helps those people feed their families. \nOnly Emmett can extend the application period and select the sites where people can apply. He has designated today as the last day people can apply in a location that is remote to most people who live in Houston. People have been forced to wait in lines that stretch for miles. One man died of a heart attack during the grueling wait. We’re going to tell him that this is wrong.

SUMMARY:Russian Revolution 100 Year Anniversary Forum
DESCRIPTION:The October Revolution of 1917 showed what working class people can do when they organize to change society in their own interest. One hundred years later\, there are still so many lessons to learn from the millions who fought to put an end to war\, poverty\, and oppression in that great struggle. Join us to discuss their example and what it means for today’s world. \nWe will be meeting in the Language Building\, room #310.

DESCRIPTION:On September 5\, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the federal government was ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)\, a program that allowed undocumented immigrants who entered the United States before the age of 16\, and met other requirements\, temporary work authorization and protection from deportation for a renewable two-year period. \nAccording to the Williams Institute\, there are over 75\,000 LGBTQ DREAMers\, named for the unsuccessful 2011 legislative effort which would have made the DACA provisions law. An estimated 36\,000 LGBTQ DREAMers have used DACA’s provisions to pursue schooling and build a life in this country–a life that is now threatened by the removal of the protections. \nJoin Resource Center and LULAC\, the League of United Latin-American Citizens\, for a special edition of “Resource Center Presents: Voices of the DREAMers\,” on Wednesday\, October 18. Hear the stories of people who have used DACA and its protections\, as well as from an immigration attorney to sort out the legal issues surrounding the DREAMers. The panel will be moderated by the Center’s communications and advocacy manager Rafael McDonnell. \nThis is a FREE event but seating is limited. Please reserve your seat today.

SUMMARY:Real Aid\, Right Now: Mobilize for Hurricane Recovery Justice
DESCRIPTION:Over the last 2 months\, hundreds of thousands of Americans have had their lives ripped apart by Hurricanes Harvey\, Irma\, and Maria. \nThe Trump Administration has failed to provide the relief our people need and instead has met these tragic events with inefficiency\, indifference\, and negligence. \nBy standing united\, we will use our combined voices to demand the Trump Administration: \n– cancel any debt accrued by these events\n– release money from the hands of FEMA and HUD and into the hands of the people \nJoin us as we march from the United States Capitol to the White House to demand a fair and swift response for vulnerable communities hit by these disasters. \nPeople are dying every day and the utter devastation that entire communities are in from across all disaster sites requires an immediate and appropriate response. We demand #RealAidRightNow.

SUMMARY:Justice for Palestine is a Universal Issue
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, October 16\, at 7:00 pm\, the American Jewish Council in Dallas will be hosting a panel titled\, “U.S. Support for Israel as a Bipartisan Issue.” We will be gathering to bring attention to the damage of the increasing support for the Israeli state that silences\, oppresses\, and subjects Palestine and its people to countless human rights violations. U.S. support for Israel is support for an open-air prison\, support for the genocide of the Palestinian people\, and silencing the voices of dissenting Jewish and Israeli communities who vehemently oppose the occupation of Palestinian land and the support U.S. offers to Israel. \nThis event is co-organized by North Texas Democratic Socialists of America (DSA)\, Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO)\, North Texas Solidarity\, Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL)\, Green Party of Collin County\, and the International Socialist Organization (ISO). \nThe American Jewish Council has\, historically\, supported a zionist Israeli state without regard to the Palestinian people and communities that are being forcefully displaced\, exterminated\, and imprisoned for their existence. AJC actively fights dissenting opinions on the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land\, and regularly attacks the Palestinian-led movement for liberation\, Boycott\, Divestment\, Sanctions (BDS). The speakers will be Representative Pete Sessions (R) Representative Marc Veasey (D). \nRep. Pete Sessions has commitment to an unbreakable U.S.-Israel bond and opposes Arms Treaty that limits gun trade to Israel.\n(http://www.thepoliticalguide.com/Profiles/House/Texas/Pete_Sessions/Views/Israel/) \nRep. Marc Veasey has expressed support for military aid and contributions to Israel\, going as far as to praise stealth F-35 fighter jets\, capable of launching ground attacks that will inevitably kill Palestinian citizens unbiasedly.
