MeToo: Women’s Liberation with Sharon Smith

April 5, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

A new resistance is growing. Ever since the serial abuser Donald Trump assumed the presidency, millions of women and survivors of sexual violence have taken to the streets and lifted their voices in defiance of the status quo. In just over a year, popular consciousness has been transformed, and hundreds of powerful men have been struck down from Hollywood to Washington. There is hope again that sexism and misogyny can be challenged and fought. What will it take to build a movement that can end women’s oppression for good? Join us to discuss how socialists understand sexism, and how we can move forward together toward liberation for all women.

Sharon Smith is a longstanding socialist and feminist activist and one of the leading voices on the US left around women’s oppression and the fight for liberation. She is the author of Subterranean Fire: A History of Working-Class Radicalism in the United States and Women and Socialism: Class, Race, and Capital.

This talk is part of the Socialism Tour 2018, bringing experienced activists and thinkers to cities across the country in the lead-up to this year’s Socialism Conference in Chicago.
