Frack Free Fridays- June 26

June 26, 2015 @ 11:45 am

Denton residents have maintained a steady presence outside Vantage’s frack site for three weeks, highlighted by weekly events coined “Frack Free Fridays.” Dozens rallied next to the Vantage frack well which is violating our ban. Residents danced, sung, spoke powerful words and smashed a frack well piñata.

Last week’s event came on the heels of a decision by City Council to repeal Denton’s fracking ordinance in order to avoid legal persecution from the Texas Oil and Gas Association and the Texas General Land Office, who have active lawsuits against the city. Despite the city’s decision to repeal the ban, more residents turned out last week to defend the people’s vote than ever before.

A local Denton mother was arrested for peacefully sitting down in front of a fracking truck attempting to enter a Vantage Energy well site located less than 200 feet from nearby houses and businesses. That makes 10 arrests of Denton residents since fracking restarted after HB40.

“I am really disturbed by the fact that our majority, democratic vote was completely disregarded by our elected officials in Austin,” said Meredith. “Our representatives have failed us. Not only is this a slap in the face for democracy, it also sets a terrifying precedent. If we don’t stand up now, who knows how easy it will be for them to take away our next vote too, and every vote after that.”

Let’s continue our momentum to enforce our ban and repeal HB40: http://bprisingtide.org/statement/
