First Ever Texas Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Policy Summit

October 9, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - October 11, 2016 @ 12:00 pm

Texas Black women have grown tired of being left out of the conversations being had about their bodies and for that reason The Afiya Center has taken the charge to amplify their voices and spearhead the First Ever Texas Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Policy Summit. The purpose of the summit is to create a convening of Black women in Texas who can lead the conversation and on the critical issues surrounding Black women, reproductive rights, and the abortion movement. The big vision is to bring in new allies and resources for Black women living in Texas and provide a framework to implement in their respective districts, communities, and organizations.

On October 9 – 11th in Dallas, Texas, The Afiya Center will bring together leading women’s rights and reproductive justice advocates and community members to shed light on reproductive oppression’s harmful effects on women, and to collaborate on an intersectional policy agenda focused on groundbreaking solutions. This historic summit will be the first convening of this nascent coalition.

To kick off the summit, TAC will host an opening reception: “Ending Reproductive Oppression: Black Women Re-Inventing the Movement for Reproductive Health & Justice.” The event will feature Loretta Ross and Byllye Avery, co-creators of the reproductive justice framework that guides the center’s work, in conversation with The Afiya Center founder and Executive Director, Marsha Jones. This highly anticipate event will attract approximately 50 – 75 leaders in law, policy, women’s rights, reproductive health and justice reform will be in attendance, including women and children directly impacted by abortion access and reproductive oppression.
